Meet the Developers
Page to Pixel Publishing is publishing and marketing the game, so we were able to get some additional behind-the-scenes content from the developers. Some of our interviews have since been made into short dev vlogs that we posted on our social media platform, X, but we wanted to give a glimpse of some of the additional responses that haven’t made it to social media too.
Being able to watch Secondhand Gnome on this journey has truly been a gem. They have put their heart and soul into this game and already have ideas for their next one. (Stay tuned!) Though it started as a game jam, it turned out to be a pretty incredible game. Sound and Music Director, Delaney, says that “learning that [she] was capable of doing it” was her favorite part. It originally started as a game jam and being able to find things around the house to turn into music was an adventure in itself. When it comes to the programmer, he had some thoughts of his own. Some of his favorite parts were “iterating on the sadness level…trying to make sure that people can play the game the way they want… and particle effects!” If you know Austin, you know he loves his particle effects!
We were also able to learn an interesting fact about the title screen music from Delaney. She talks about how “you can hear a little jingle in the background” because her dog, Daisy, was sitting right next to her and shook her collar during recording. If you actually listen to the video on social media that they posted talking about this, Daisy is shaking her collar again, almost on cue.
According to the lead programmer, his favorite level is Rage since he is a fan of programming combat. He really likes that “Clay never directly attacks anyone, but redirects the anger away instead of letting it get to him”. That is a great point and maybe even a great life lesson. Personally, my favorite level is sadness because the original was saw the… how do I put this gently… disaster it was when it started, but it is so fun and cozy now. I love the space theme and the lantern that helps navigate you along the way. Such a neat idea with amazing graphics.
And of course, we had to ask Austin which boss he resonated with most, and we might have gotten the most Austin answer out of him; IYKYK. He says that he relates mostly to the Confusion boss, since he is “a weird frog with indecipherable mannerisms”. If that doesn’t make you want to check out the game, I am not sure what will!
