Voice Acting: Routines, Advice, and Enjoying the Journey

Dexter: Voice Actor for Stitched Together
At Page to Pixel Publishing, we care about our dev teams and love to nerd out about all the cool stuff that goes into their video game creation – whether it be music, art, programming, voice acting, editing, testing, all of it. We recognize that not everyone gets such an in-depth look at the teams, the hard work they put into their games, and their journeys on becoming who they are, so we want to share that with you!
For this dev blog, we interviewed Dexter (he/him), the voice actor for Isaac Alvarez on Stitched Together from Tekkou Studios. We wanted to understand his background in voice acting, what his routine looks like for maximum success, and share any advice he has for future VAs and gamers.
Let’s get into it!
What is your background in voice acting and how did you get into it?
“I haven’t been voice acting for too long, a couple of years, but I’ve been lucky enough to be cast in some really cool indie games (Jawbreaker, Wildwood Down, Cookie Cutter).
I got into voice acting because I love the medium and how much fun you can have and emotion you can convey. I’m also a huge fan of animation, video games, and that opening scene from Mrs. Doubtfire, so kind of just taught myself and got better along the way.”
Were there any other games that inspired your voice acting for Stitched Together?
“Not really any games that inspired the voice. I do tend to be an overthinker like Isaac, I’m just not as verbal about it. So I just kind of tapped into those anxieties, but also kept some of my personality in there.”
If you had to describe Stitched Together in 3 words, what would they be?
“Friendship, Nostalgia, ComingOfAge(one word)”
What moment in creating Stitched Together made you proud?
“I was super proud to initially be cast! And then seeing some of the first demo stuff come out – my voice performing lines for this awesome game with a ton of heart – that made me proud. And thinking about kids, maybe even my own son, playing it someday makes me happy.”
Is there a special routine or environment that you have to be in to do your best work for game creation?
“My routine is: get in my closet VA booth (cool mic, sound panels, moving blankets for sound, the whole shebang) and just try to have fun with it. Maybe I’ll have a little tea and some water. I’m probably standing up being performative. It’s a good time.”
What is something you could talk about for hours when it comes to voice acting?
“This is a tough one. I do love to just generally nerd out on the media I consume. But I have a really strong opinion that might differ from others when it comes to voice acting and that is you DON’T need formal acting training. You don’t need to pay for a $500 Zoom class, or take improv to get started. I had a bit of paralysis by analysis for so long about starting VA, but when I finally just started putting out auditions I was able to get better on my own timeline. Classes and improv and all that are great for some, and I’m sure they do help, but they’re not for everyone and they’re not realistically affordable for everyone. So if you want to be a voice actor, watch some YouTube videos, talk to yourself all day (practice) and make it happen! *steps off soapbox* ”
What would you like people to know about you, voice acting, Tekkou Studios, and/or Stitched Together?
“I’d like people to know that I’m really proud to be a part of Stitched Together. I’ve had the good fortune of seeing it kind of come together piece by piece through a working server. And again, just a lot of heart and a few people working really hard to create something cool.”
What advice do you have for other voice actors in the gaming community?
“Not many notes. Keep crushing. Be nice to each other. Social media is a great place to share things, but it doesn’t make or break you as a voice actor if you don’t have 2883628:9292$4 followers. (Which I don’t, so follow me)”
How can we all help continue to make the game industry a little bit better?
“Buy the games! Try out the indie games! Download weird Fallout mods! Enjoy and support the stories that people are putting out there!”

We had such a great time learning more about Dexter, his journey of creating Stitched Together, and how he got where he is today. If you want to learn more about him, you can follow him at @DexDoesVoices on most socials.
